Follow these steps to install DekTek’s concrete deck tiles using our Sleeper System with Trex RainEscape waterproof decking membrane:

  1. Joists can be installed either 12" or 16" on center (o.c.).
  2. Install Trex RainEscape according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  3. Install 2x4 sleepers flat, spaced 16" o.c., running perpendicular to the joists. Secure the sleepers over the Trex RainEscape by screwing them into the joists below. Although this punctures the waterproof membrane, the 2x4 sleeper creates a sealed connection, ensuring no leaks.
  4. Refer to DekTek Tile’s Sleeper System Installation Guide for further details.

Waterproofing a DekTek Tile Deck with EPDM Membranes Using our Sleeper System

Follow these steps for the best and easiest way to waterproof a deck with EPDM membranes:

  1. Install Joists

    • Position joists either 12" or 16" on center (o.c.).
  2. Install EPDM Membrane

    • Lay the EPDM membrane over the joists, allowing it to droop between the joists to form water drainage channels.
    • Ensure the channels are shallower near the house and deepen as they extend down the deck to create a downhill slope for water flow.
    • Secure the membrane to the house to prevent water from seeping between the structure and the rubber membrane.
    • At the lower end of the deck, ensure water drains off the membrane or into a gutter system.
  3. Install Sleeper System

    • Place treated 2x4 sleepers flat over the membrane, spaced 16" o.c., running perpendicular to the joists.
    • Screw the sleepers through the membrane into the joists below.
    • Add blocking as needed for guardrail posts.
  4. Install DekTek Tiles
